Ultra Space (Japanese: ウルトラスペース Ultra Space) is an interdimensional realm from where Ultra Beasts may come, being accessible via Ultra Wormhole. Ultra Space and Ultra Wormholes were discovered and named by Professor Mohn of the Aether Foundation. Professor Burnet, a researcher of the relationship between Pokémon and other dimensions, is researching these strange phenomena.
Geography
Ultra Space is an interdimensional spatial realm filled with crystalline meteoroids and populated by members of the Cosmog line. It links to a number of different worlds and dimensions through differently colored Ultra Wormholes called warp holes. While they may naturally occur, these wormholes are more commonly deliberately opened by Cosmog, its evolutionary relatives Solgaleo and Lunala; and Necrozma.
History
In ancient times, Necrozma's light shone through the Ultra Wormholes connecting to various worlds such as the Ultra Beasts' homeworlds, Ultra Megalopolis and the Pokémon world, primarily over the Alola region. However, following an incident with the residents of Ultra Megalopolis in ancient years, Necrozma's body was damaged and it lost the ability to produce light, the agony caused by its injuries sending it into a berserk state where it constantly hungered for light. As a result, it was imprisoned in Megalo Tower. Professor Kukui theorizes that the Sparkling Stones found across Alola and fashioned into Z-Rings and Z-Power Rings are the lost pieces of Necrozma's body.
At one point in the past, a SolgaleoSUS/LunalaMUM arrived in Alola from Ultra Space and won a fight against the guardian deities. Solgaleo/Lunala bestowed the Tapunium Z to the guardian deities, and in conjunction with a LunalaSUS/SolgaleoMUM produced several Cosmog that were revered by the region's monarchies and protected by the four tapu, before the Legendary Pokémon departed back to Ultra Space.
At another point in the past, Necrozma appeared in Alola and stole its light, covering the region in darkness. Necrozma clashed against the guardian deities, who fought to defend Alola. During that time, Necrozma also absorbed SolgaleoUS/LunalaUM to become its Dusk ManeUS/Dawn WingsUM form. With the assistance of a youth, Z-Crystals and Sparkling Stones, the deities banished Necrozma, freed SolgaleoUS/LunalaUM and reclaimed Alola's light.
Prior to the events of Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Professor Mohn and the Aether Foundation had done research on Ultra Space, giving the location its name, and discovering what lies beyond Ultra Wormholes. He had discovered that Cosmog may be an Ultra Beast, due to its origins of Ultra Space.
In the games
Pokémon Sun and Moon
Lusamine and Guzma go into an Ultra Wormhole using Nebby's power. They then wind up in the home of Nihilego, the Ultra Deep Sea (referred to as Ultra Space). The player and Lillie travel to this world, in order to save Guzma and Lusamine, by forming another Ultra Wormhole created by Nebby at the Altar of the SunneS/Altar of the MooneM after it evolved into a SolgaleoS/LunalaM. They return to Alola with Guzma and Lusamine defeating her after she fuses with Nihilego.
In the post-game, an Ultra Wormhole can still be found at the Altar of the SunneS/Altar of the MooneM and can be passed through to enter an alternate version of the Pokémon world, specifically Alola, where it'll be nighttimeS/daytimeM instead, there the player can obtain a Cosmog. This world is known as the reverse world.
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
The following areas can be accessed by merely interacting with the Ultra Wormhole at the Altar of the SunneUS/Altar of the MooneUM:
Unlike Sun and Moon, the player can travel through the Ultra Wormhole with the Ultra Recon Squad's SolgaleoUS/LunalaUM or Nebby using the Ultra Warp Ride throught the Ultra Wormhole at the Altar of the SunneUS/Altar of the MooneUM and access several new Ultra Space worlds through the Warp Holes. The following areas can be accessed this way:
If a Pikachu, Cubone, or Exeggcute is evolved in Ultra Space, it will evolve into Kantonian Raichu, Marowak, or Exeggutor rather than their respective Alolan form. Despite the Ultra Ruin being an alternate version of Alola, Pikachu, Exeggcute and Cubone will still evolve into their Kanto counterparts as opposed to their Alolan forms.
In the anime
In Revealing the Stuff of Legend!, Ash, his classmates, and Gladion traveled through an Ultra Wormhole with Solgaleo to the Ultra Deep Sea to rescue Lusamine from Nihilego. Everyone escaped the Ultra Deep Sea and returned to their own world in 10,000,000 Reasons to Fight!
An anime-exclusive world in Ultra Space known only as Poipole's world debuted in a dream The Shape of Love to Come!. It is the home world of Ash's Poipole. In The Prism Between Light and Darkness!, the Ultra Guardians arrived in this world with Lunala in pursuit of Necrozma, where it was revealed that Necrozma used to grant light to this alternate world before it lost its power protecting its residents. With the combined Ultra Aura of the people and Pokémon of Alola, Necrozma was able to return to its Ultra form, bringing life back to the world. Its mission complete, Poipole decided to stay with its kind, bidding Ash and Pikachu farewell.
In Battling the Beast Within!, Ash and Pikachu were transported through a dimensional rift to the Ultra Ruin, an alternate version of Alola that was devastated by the arrival of a Guzzlord. The pair came face to face with Guzzlord, but were rescued by Dia and his friend Zeraora. Ash and Pikachu later assisted Dia and Zeraora in pushing Guzzlord into an Ultra Wormhole before returning to their own world in Parallel Friendships!.
In the final episode of Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon, Ash recounted a story of an adventure he had with Solgaleo in an unnamed Ultra Space world, where he helped an Ultra Beast he had "never seen before", despite all known Ultra Beasts having debuted in the anime. It was later shown in a flashback in footage recorded by Rotom, who showed it to the Aether Foundation. Lusamine was so impressed by Rotom's findings that she offered Rotom a position helping the Foundation, which Rotom accepted with Ash's blessing.

Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc
Ultra Space first appeared in Adventure in the Dark Dimension, where Sun and Moon were trapped in Ultra Deep Sea for six months after being dragged there by Necrozma and being separated from Lunala. After being found by the Ultra Recon Squad, they traveled to Ultra Megalopolis, with Lusamine also arriving there soon after to catch Necrozma. Eventually, Sun, Moon, and Lusamine were sent back to Alola through an Ultra Wormhole.
In Pokémon Adventures, the various dimensions in Ultra Space were named by the Ultra Recon Squad. All of them, except for Ultra Ruin and Ultra Space Wilds, were at least mentioned in this chapter.
